4th Quarter Literature - We will continue our novel study of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This novel study focuses on reading strategies, reading comprehension skills, related literary devices, literary elements, and writing skills. We will continue to hone in on improving our writing skills through short answer comprehension questions. STUDENTS MUST BE READING IN ANOTHER SILENT READING BOOK DAILY! (AT LEAST 15 MINUTES A DAY AT HOME, PLEASE.)
4th Quarter Grammar - This semester, I introduced the Oxford-Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop to begin working on building vocabulary to prepare for ITBS tests, and MAPs testing. The second half of this workshop will be completed in 8th grade to prepare for high school vocabulary, placement tests, PSATs and SATs. We will also continue working with Wanda Phillips' Easy Grammar program, focusing on parts of speech and correct usage, which will also enhance writing skills.
4th Quarter Writing - Middle school writing focuses on both the Writing Process and the Six Traits of Writing. Students are continuing to work on their Response to Literature, writing about one of their silent reading books as they continue to sharpen their writing skills. Much of the writing students complete in high school honors English classes will be writing responses to the literature they read.
